Nieuwsgierig Aapje gaat naar de dokter
Margret Rey en H.A. Rey zijn de scheppers van de kinderboekenreeks ‘Curious George’, waarmee ze 65 jaar geleden debuteerden. Er zijn inmiddels 30 miljoen exemplaren van verkocht en dit jaar verscheen er ook een film: ‘Nieuwsgierig Aapje’. Het laatste boekje dat het echtpaar Rey maakte was ‘Curious George Goes to the Hospital’, voor kinderen die naar het ziekenhuis moeten.

“This story helps ease the worry of an upcoming hospital experience. My mother used it prior to my surgery as a child. Fortunately I haven't had a similar need with my own children, but both of them have enjoyed this book and we've read it a number of times over the last few years...and days. I actually just bought this copy because my previous copy was all worn out! The only negative to the story is that it's a little 'behind the times' in some of the details (ie. a record player, children's ward in the hospital), but this certainly doesn't seem to negate children enjoying it.”
“This is without a doubt the best book in the Curious George series. George mistakenly eats a jigsaw puzzle piece, thinking that it might be candy. When his stomach starts to hurt the next morning, the Man in the Yellow Hat takes him to the hospital. What follows is a very detailed account of all the things that a child might expect to encounter while undergoing a simple surgery. George encounters everything from xrays to shots to a somewhat painful recovery as he sets up residence for a couple of days in the children's ward.
There is some excitement toward the end, as George commandeers a go-cart and crashes into a dining cart (in front of the visiting mayor, no less), but the emphasis is definitely on the workings of a hospital from the perspective of a young patient. Other books in this series are nothing special, in my opinion, but I thought that this book provided a great example for children who might be worried about a visit to the doctor or hospital. This is a good read for any child, and a must-read for a child with a visit to the hospital in the future.”
