Zoon Bart, die erom bekend staat graag taboes te doorbreken, gaat in de film spiernaakt een potje skateboarden, tot groot vemaak van het publiek. Vader Homer dumpt per ongeluk nucleair afval in de rivier, zodat het dorpje Springfield ontruimd moet worden. Ondertussen krijgt dochter Lisa een relatie met een Ierse milieuactivist en begint opa Simpson opeens in tongen te spreken. Aan actuele thema's heeft het in de tekenfilmserie (sinds 1989) nooit ontbroken. Ook wetenschappelijke thema's zijn veelvuldig behandeld en hebben zelfs aanleiding gevormd tot het boek 'What's Science Ever Done For Us: What the Simpsons Can Teach Us About Physics, Robots, Life, and the Universe'.
