Het complexe geheel is ontworpen en aangebracht door Chris Ware, inmiddels wereldwijd omarmd als zo ongeveer de Picasso van de strip, tevens schrijver en tekenaar van de grafische roman ‘Jimmy Corrigan, the smartest kid on earth’. Het is interessant dat 826 Valencia een stripmaker heeft gevraagd het gebouw in San Francisco een eigen gezicht te geven, omdat het ook iets zegt over de sfeer waarin hun educatieve projecten zich afspelen.

826 Valencia is een typisch product van de multiculturele samenleving, waar bijzondere initiatieven genomen moeten worden om ook de mensen in achterstandsbuurten een kans te geven. Zo zeggen de mensen van dit idealistische instituut het zelf: “Simply put, 826 Valencia helps students, ages 8–18, to develop their writing skills. Whether the students are working in the realm of fiction, nonfiction, or English as a second language, we are here to help them explore their love of writing. We offer free drop-in tutoring, workshops, and storytelling. We also help students create their own story collections, zines, and other publications.”
